In the Beginning ..........
The
Health Strategy Group is a registered Scottish Charity No: SC 023736

In the beginning (1993)…........
A community health visitor brought together three
local women’s groups who, working together, organised and ran a Community
Health Day which
resulted in the birth of the .......................
“Health Strategy Group”
1995… The James Report exposed
Scotland as having ’the worst diet in Europe’ . We secured the lease
for our shop and opened the project premises including a Fruit & Veg
Co-operative in Broomhouse Market in West Edinburgh.
At this time (1996)
we helped set up the biggest community food project in Britain - Edinburgh
Community Food Initiative. This was a big help to
us as ECFI would deliver all our produce at cost price helping us to supply
affordable, accessible fresh fruit and veg. for
our local community.
As our reputation grew we were invited
to take part in local events; we set up a walking group; supplied bananas for
the fun run; went into the nursery and made fruit kebabs/salad with the children
etc.
In
1998 local youngsters only wanted to play footie! So we organised our
biggest event so far!
‘Fun
With Food and Football’
a three day event which offered 100 kids coaching in
fitness, food and of course -football. Our own volunteers along with Hearts
youth team, ECFI, various health board departments, and support from Whitbreads
and lots of bread supplied by Warburtons
we ran this successful event.
Over the years we have organised and run health
events, cooking courses, taster sessions, children’s events, local conferences
as well as our ongoing activities like the food co-op & counselling service.
